How to send a fax without a fax machine

Updated November 3, 2026

You don’t need a fax machine. Put the document in a PDF or take a photo of it, then send it from a website like sendfaxwell.com/send to the fax number. It goes over the phone network like any fax, and you’re told when it arrives.

What you need

1. Send it from a website (the quickest)

  1. Open sendfaxwell.com/send on your phone or computer.
  2. Type the fax number and choose the PDF or photo.
  3. Check the preview of the fax, then pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card.
  4. It dials straight away. The page shows when it’s delivered.

If the line is busy or nobody answers, Faxwell tries again for about 3 hours and shows when the next try is. You’re only charged for pages that go through. On the web, page credits come in packs of 50 for $3.99 or 200 for $11.99, about 6 to 8¢ a page. Each card payment has a fixed fee, so the smallest web pack is 50 page credits; the Faxwell iPhone app (coming soon) will sell 10 for $0.99. Credits you don’t use stay in your account and last as long as you fax once a year.

2. Ask your AI assistant

If you use Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant that can use tools, add Faxwell once and then just say “fax this to my doctor.” The assistant asks for the number and the document, and gives you a link to check the fax and pay. See how to send a fax with AI.

3. Use a store or a library

Many shipping and office-supply stores send faxes for you, and some public libraries do too. You bring the paper, they dial. Prices vary by store and are usually per page, so ask first. It’s handy if you don’t have a scanner or a phone camera.

4. Use a fax machine

If you have one on a landline, it still works. Most homes and many offices don’t have a landline anymore, which is why online fax services exist.

How to know it arrived

A fax isn’t like email: the receiving machine confirms each page during the call. Faxwell shows “Delivered” with the time once the recipient’s machine confirms it. Keep that if you need proof you sent it. If it didn’t go through, you’re told why in plain words and aren’t charged.
